* * * * * * * * * *
Guns N' Roses is an American rock band that was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. The band, led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose, has gone through numerous line-up changes and controversies since its formation. The band has released six studio albums, three EPs and one live album during its career.

The band has sold an estimated 100 million albums worldwide, including over 43 million in the United States. The band's 1987 major label debut album Appetite for Destruction has sold in excess of 28 million copies and reached number one on the United States Billboard 200. In addition, the album charted three Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Sweet Child o' Mine" which reached number one. The 1991 albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II debuted on the two highest spots on the Billboard 200 and have sold a combined 14 million copies in the United States alone and 35 million worldwide. After over a decade of work, the band released their follow-up album, Chinese Democracy, in 2008.

Their mid-to-late eighties and early nineties years have been described by individuals in the music industry as the period in which "they brought forth a hedonistic rebelliousness and revived the punk attitude-driven hard rock scene, reminiscent of the early Rolling Stones.

The group was formed in early 1985 by Hollywood Rose members Axl Rose (vocals) and Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar), and L.A. Guns members Tracii Guns (lead guitar), Ole Beich (bass) and Rob Gardner (drums). The band created its name by combining two of the group members' names. A short time later, bassist Ole Beich was fired and replaced by Duff McKagan. After a short while Tracii Guns was replaced by Slash; after Tracii didn't show up to rehearsal. Slash had played with McKagan in Road Crew and Stradlin during a short stint in Hollywood Rose. The new line-up came together quickly, but after deciding to go on a "tour" from Sacramento, California to Duff's home town of Seattle, drummer Rob Gardner quit and was replaced by Slash's close friend Steven Adler. The band, which continued to be called Guns N' Roses even after the departure of Tracii Guns, established its first stable line up on this so-called "Hell Tour". In an interview, Slash stated, "That [trip to Seattle] is really what cemented the band" and established its chemistry.

Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction (1987)
The debut studio album released in 1987, it was well-received by critics and topped the American Billboard 200 chart. As of September 2008, the album has been certified diamond (plus 18x platinum) by the RIAA, accumulating worldwide sales in excess of twenty-eight million as of October 2008.The album still remains the fastest-selling debut album in history.

While the songwriting credits are credited to all five band members, many of the songs began as solo tracks that individual band members wrote separate from the band, only to be completed later. These songs include "It's So Easy" (McKagan) and "Think About You" (Stradlin). "Rocket Queen" was an unfinished Slash/Adler song that was written from their earlier band Road Crew, whereas "Anything Goes", written by Hollywood Rose and included in their compilation album The Roots of Guns N' Roses, was later re-written for Appetite.

Slash's Snakepit was a rock band formed by then-Guns N' Roses lead guitarist Slash in 1994. Fellow Guns N' Roses members Matt Sorum (drums), Gilby Clarke (rhythm guitar) also joined him. On bass was Mike Inez of Alice in Chains. Eric Dover (who had previously played guitar for Jellyfish) sang lead vocals. GN'R colleagues Teddy Andreadis and Dizzy Reed also appeared on the record playing harmonica & keyboards respectively.

The legend goes that Slash and Sorum were jamming in Slash's home studio Justify Full(known as "The Snakepit" due to the guitarist's fondness for snakes, and the studio being in proximity to his pets) with a view to working on new GN'R material. Soon, Gilby Clarke (rhythm guitar in Guns at the time) was joining them and contributing ideas. They demo'd songs together, onto which Slash apparently overdubbed some bass parts. In some cases, GN'R bassist Duff McKagan also contributed ideas and is credited as having co-written "Beggars & Hangers-On".

According to Axl Rose, in a 1999 interview with MTV's Kurt Loder, these songs were offered to Guns N' Roses as prospective material, but were turned down by Rose.

Slash recruited Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez to complete the musical side of the group. Gilby Clarke's drummer, Mark Danziesen, suggested Dover as vocalist, and after passing the audition, he joined the quintet to complete recording of what would become "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere".

Up to this point, Slash had always been publicly against a solo effort, claiming he had no need for one whilst Guns was in action. In promoting this album, he remained pragmatic in statements that it wasn't "really" a solo album, just a project that had come together by accident, and morphed into another band which was now keeping him busy whilst Guns was on hiatus. Slash wanted the band to simply be called "Snakepit", but the record company insisted they add his name to help increase sales.

JOHN WAITE

Thursday, February 18, 2010
John Waite (born John Charles Waite, 4 July 1952, Lancaster, Lancashire, England) is a rock singer and musician. He was the lead vocalist for the bands The Babys and Bad English. As a solo artist, he scored a #1 hit in the United States with "Missing You" in 1984.

Waite first came to attention as the lead singer and bassist of The Babys, a British group which had moderate chart success and a solid following for their concert tours. Over the course of five years, the Babys produced five albums ending with the final album On the Edge in October 1980, after which the group broke up.

Waite subsequently launched his solo career with his 1982 debut album Ignition, which produced the hit single "Change". The Chrysalis 45 failed to chart on Billboard's Hot 100 during its initial release but was a top track on AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) radio stations as well as a very popular music video on MTV as the 'new' cable channel celebrated its first full year of operation. The pulsating track was written by Holly Knight and in 1985 was included on the Platinum selling Vision Quest soundtrack. (The single was reissued and this time it reached the Top 50 on the Hot 100.) "Going To The Top" was released as the original follow-up single to "Change".

ALTER BRIDGE

Thursday, February 18, 2010
* * * * * * * * * *
Alter Bridge is an American rock band based in Orlando, Florida. The band was formed in 2004 by then-former members of Creed, Mark Tremonti (lead guitar, vocals), Brian Marshall (bass) and Scott Phillips (drums), which had gone through a breakup due to issues with singer Scott Stapp. Joining Alter Bridge is Myles Kennedy (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), formerly of The Mayfield Four.

Kennedy, Tremonti, Phillips and Marshall started a new band and soon after juggling a few names (one of which was One Day Remains, which eventually became the title for their debut album), settled on the moniker Alter Bridge, which was named after a bridge in Detroit near Tremonti's home on Alter Road. The bridge led to a bad side of town and the neighborhood children were not allowed to cross because of this. Thus, according to Tremonti, the name of the band symbolizes going over into the unknown and starting something new.

POISON

* * * * * * * * * *
Poison is an American glam metal band that achieved success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. To date, the band has sold more than 25 million records worldwide, including 14.5 million in the United States alone. After 25 years, the band is still recording music and performing.

Poison was formed in 1983 under the name Paris and consisted of lead vocalist Bret Michaels, guitarist Matt Smith, bassist Bobby Dall, and drummer Rikki Rockett. Moving to Los Angeles on March 6, 1984, they started playing big clubs and several other clubs. The name Poison was picked by the band after seeing Spinal Tap.

During this period, Poison's manager negotiated a deal under which the West Hollywood club, The Troubador, would pay for shows. At this time, Smith left the band to return home to Pennsylvania, which led to an audition session that was won by C.C. DeVille.

Michaels, Dall, Rockett and DeVille signed to independent label Enigma Records in 1986 (see 1986 in music) for approximately $30,000. Their debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, was released August 2, 1986

Poison - Look What The Cat Dragged In (1986)
Though not a success at first, the album steadily built momentum and peaked at #3 on the charts on May 23, 1987. The album spawned four singles, three of them charting successfully: "Talk Dirty to Me", "I Want Action", "I Won't Forget You", and "Cry Tough". The album is a prime example of the glam metal genre both musically and image-wise. The album ultimately has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide, one of their bests sold albums.

Poison - Open Up And Say... Ahh!
(1988)
The second studio album of Poison, released in 1988 through the Enigma label of Capitol Records. The album, which ultimately sold eight million copies worldwide, proved to be the band's most successful release. It spawned four hit singles, which are "Nothin' but a Good Time", "Your Mama Don't Dance", "Fallen Angel", and their only number one single to date, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". The album is widely considered a classic in the glam metal genre.

Open Up and Say... Ahh! reflects a style commonly characterised as glam metal, a form of heavy metal which had its genesis on the East Coast of the United States (and, in particular, the sound of New York City band Kiss), but which was transplanted to the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, California in the 1980s. However, the album contains less of a heavy metal influence than a typical glam metal album, rather being more traditional rock and roll-based. The west-coast influence is reflected more prominently on the album than on its predecessor, Look What the Cat Dragged In, with aspects of Van Halen styled Californian stadium rock becoming increasingly apparent.

The album was recorded and mixed at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles. Paul Stanley from KISS (whose song "Rock and Roll All Nite" had been covered by Poison the year before) was originally selected to produce the record, but was unable to fulfill the role due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, the band worked with Tom Werman. Werman was an experienced rock producer, having worked with artists such as Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, and Mtley Cre.

The original front cover of the album, which featured model "Bambi" dressed as a luminous red demon with a protruding tongue (similar to Gene Simmons of Kiss), caused controversy amongst church and parental groups. In previous U.S. releases, the album was released with a censored cover in which most of the models face was obscured. The 2006 remastered CD release features the original cover art.

01. Love on The Rocks

Poison - Crack a Smile... and More! (2000)

Their 5th studio album released on March 14, 2000 and peaked at #131 on The Billboard 200. The life cycle of Crack a Smile, which began in 1994, was brought to an abrupt halt in May 1994, when vocalist Bret Michaels lost control of his Ferrari. Michaels suffered a broken nose, ribs, jaw, and fingers and lost four teeth.

After his recovery in 1995, the band continued recording. To the band's dismay, however, Capitol Records had by this time decided to put the album "on the back burner", and instead released a Greatest Hits record. It was not until March 14, 2000 that the record was finally released. The album's eventual release was prompted by strong fan demand, with promotional copies and bootlegs selling for $50 or more.

Poison - Seven Days Live (2008)
Released August 26, 2008 on Armoury Records. The timing for the release of this CD is unfortunate. Barely a month ago the far superior Live, Raw & Uncut live CD/DVD was released by a different record label. - releasing two different live CDs in a month is a bit of hair metal overload.
Seven Days Live is the CD version of a 1993 concert recorded in London. It was originally released on DVD in 2006 and on VHS back in 1993. At the time C.C. Deville was not in the band, and Richie Kotzen was Poison's guitarist. For some reason, they chopped five songs from the original concert that were on the DVD, but not on this CD.

The 10 songs (plus a drum solo) on Seven Days Live include Poison's biggest hits such as "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Talk Dirty To Me" and "Unskinny Bop." The sound quality is decent, although the background vocals are sometimes a little shaky.

Tracks:
01. Ride The Wind
02. Something to Believe In
03. Stand
04. Fallen Angel
05. Look What The Cat Dragged In
06. Drum Solo
07. Until You Suffer Some Fire and Ice
08. Unskinny Bop
09. Talk Dirty To Me
10. Every Rose Has It's Thorn
11. Nothin' But a Good Time

NOTE:
Seven Days Live is the only recording of the Richie Kotzen era.

Dio is an American heavy metal band led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who formed it in 1982 after leaving Black Sabbath. In an interview, available on the special edition re-release of Holy Diver, Dio states that he never intended to begin a solo career. His intention was to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath member, drummer Vinny Appice. Naming the band Dio made sense from a commercial standpoint, as the name was already well-known at that time.

In 1982, disagreements originating over the mixing of Black Sabbath's Live Evil resulted in the departure of Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice from the band.[2] Wanting to continue together as a band, the two formed Dio in October 1982 in the United States. The following May, the band released their debut album, Holy Diver. It featured two hit singles, "Rainbow in the Dark" and "Holy Diver", which gained popularity from MTV. Ronnie James Dio and Jimmy Bain played keyboards in the studio, but recruited keyboardist Claude Schnell for live shows in 1984.

WHITE LION

Thursday, February 18, 2010

White Lion - is an American/Danish glam metal band that was formed in New York City in 1983 by Danish vocalist Mike Tramp and American guitarist Vito Bratta. Mainly active in the 1980s and early 1990s, the band achieved double platinum status with their #8 hit "Wait" and #3 hit "When the Children Cry". White Lion disbanded in 1991, but was reformed again by Tramp in 1999 with all new musicians.

After moving from Denmark to New York in 1983, vocalist Mike Tramp (ex-Mabel,ex-Studs) met Staten Island guitarist Vito Bratta (ex-Dreamer) and decided to form a band. The two recruited drummer Nicki Capozzi and bassist Felix Robinson (formerly of Angel) and named the group White Lion.

White Lion was signed by Elektra Records in 1984 and recorded their debut Fight to Survive. However, Elektra was unhappy with the final recording, and after refusing to release the album, terminated their contract.

Both Capozzi and Robinson soon left the band. Nicki Capozzi was replaced by former Anthrax drummer Greg D'Angelo, and Felix Robinson was replaced by bassist Dave Spitz (brother of Anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz). Within a month of joining, however, Dave Spitz left to play bass with Black Sabbath and was replaced by James LoMenzo.

The album Fight to Survive was eventually re-recorded with new line-up & picked up by RCA and released in Japan in 1984. The small US independent label Grand Slam records finally released Fight To Survive in the US on November 9, 1985. A few months later, Grand Slam records went bankrupt.

Unlike most bands of their genre, White Lion recorded occasional songs that addressed social or political issues such as apartheid ("Cry for Freedom") and the effect of divorce on children ("Broken Home"). The song "Little Fighter" was about the Rainbow Warrior, a ship owned by the environmental group Greenpeace that was destroyed by operatives of the French intelligence service. This concern for political and social issues was also hinted at in the cover art to their album Big Game, which featured a lion's head hidden in tall grass with the White House in the background.

White Lion - Big Game (1989)
Their 3rd Studio Album. In the first half of 1989, still riding high off of the multi platinum success of Pride, White Lion re-entered the studio following the completion of their Pride tour to record the next album, a decision the group later came to regret due to the effects of fatigue from the heavy touring. A musically eclectic follow-up to Pride, the album featured the singles "Little Fighter", "Cry for Freedom", and a cover of Golden Earring's "Radar Love". The album quickly went gold but, without a hit single, sales slowly declined, peaking at #19 on the album charts.

White Lion - Mane Attraction (1991)
The 4th studio album of White Lion. It was released in 1991 by Atlantic Records, and reached #61 on The Billboard 200. After two years of writing and recording, White Lion released Mane Attraction in the summer of 1991. More of a "back to basics" album, centering on strong hooks and melodic hard rock, the album was received well by the fans. Unfortunately, the album failed to reach the top 20 like the last two albums. It received little or no airplay due to the recent Grunge explosion and subsequent backlash on all things "hair metal". The album also contained White Lion's only instrumental song, "Blue Monday", a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who had died while the band was writing for the album.

Tracks:
01. Lights And Thunder – 8:10
02. Broken Heart – 4:09

10. Out With the Boys – 4:35
11. Blue Monday – 4:23
12. Farewell to You – 4:22

After briefly touring in support of Mane Attraction, Tramp and Bratta decided to call it a day, their last show being held in Boston at the Channel Club in September 1991.
